In the last two weeks Paul McCartney went from playing the iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas to a free show on Hollywood Boulevard to doing Shakespeare in Santa Monica.
He played Elgamour in Two Gentlemen From Verona at the Simply Shakespeare benefit along with Tom Hanks, William Shatner and others. With script in hand, Macca was on stage for two hours singing and acting. Backed by Jackson Browne’s band, he did “Live and Let Die,” “I Saw Her Standing There” with Christina Applegate and Martin Short dancing on stage, and a duet with William Shatner on “Lucy in the Sky (With Diamonds)” with Paul singing the refrain. The show’s organizers, Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, interjected Paul's songs into the play that they felt related to Shakespearean scenes. He also did a love scene with Christina Applegate where she kissed him all over his face, leading him to say, “Careful now. My wife is in the front row!”
