The Giants were already within range of the game-winning field goal when Tom Coughlin had the Giants run what he was sure was a “safe” play. He was sure he envisioned only one possibly bad outcome.
That turned out to be exactly what he got.
And when receiver Ramses Barden was called for offensive pass interference on an ill-advised throw toward the end zone with 25 seconds remaining, the Giants lost just enough yardage to end up costing them the game. The penalty forced Lawrence Tynes to have to try a game-winning, 54-yard field goal, with 15 seconds remaining.
But his attempt fell just one yard short.
When it did, the Giants had a heart-breaking 19-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night — their eighth loss to their division rivals in the last nine games. It dropped the Giants (2-2) to 0-2 in the division, put the Eagles (3-1) alone in first place in the NFC East. And it left the Giants pondering what should have been.
