The love letters of Charles Schulz are going up for auction next week. Notes from the 1970s in which he wrote to a woman half his age. but not his wife. He had a secret mistress.
The late creator of “Peanuts” even acknowledged the affair within the comic strip. Shulz’s wife apparently discovered the affair and the love letters from his mistress. She tried to put a halt to his womanizing. At the same time, Shulz was drawing comics where Charlie Brown warns Snoopy he’s not allowed to go out “to see that girl beagle.” When Snoopy picks up the telephone, Charlie Brown yells, “And stop making those long distance phone calls.”
Art imitates life. Shulz's real drama was seeping into his comics. Sotheby's will be auctioning the love letters a week from Friday, December 17.
